Englishman and Female Companion Sentenced to 3 Years Prison in Bali for Narcotics Use
Beritabali.com reports that an Englishman living in Bali and his female companion have received relatively light prison sentences after being convicted of using cocaine in Bali.
Sentenced to 3 years in prison on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, was Thomas Allcard Williams (43) and Putri Rahamawati (24) who reportedly were overwhelmed with joy up hearing the sentence handed down by the judge – a punishment that was half of the 6 years sought by State Prosecutors.
The pair have also been fined Rp. 800,000 each.
The couple were charged under a section of the anti-narcotics law that provides for a minimum jail sentence of 4 years and a maximum of 12 years. The same law stipulates a minimum fine of Rp. 800 million and a maximum fine of Rp. 8 billion.
The presiding judge, however, decided to charge the two under another section of the narcotics code reserved for narcotics users which allowed the lesser sentence of only three years.
Williams and Rahamawati were apprehended when members of the anti-narcotics squad visited their residence as Villa Ning in Sanur on April 30, 2019. In that raid, police found a clip of cocaine weighing 0.08 grams in William’s possession that he claims to have purchased from a man named Paul in the Kerobokan area of Bali for Rp. 3 million.
When the police search Putri Rahmawati, they discovered three clips of methamphetamines on a make-up table weighing 0.40 grams and four clips of cocaine weighing 0.02 grams. Police also found two clips of “gorilla tobacco” weighing 3.04 grams.
The woman told police she purchased the methamphetamine for Rp. 1.3 million and the “gorilla tobacco” was purchased online for Rp. 600,000.
