East African Tourist Drowns off Canggu Beach, Bali
24-year-old man Drowned While Struggling in Early Evening Strong Currents on Saturday, February 1, 2020
Beritabali.com reports that a Djibouti, East African tourist, Sahal Elmi Barkadleh (24) drowned at Berawa Beach at Canggu, North Kuta on Saturday, February 1, 2020.
Barkadleh’s body was floating a short distance from the shore, opposite the Perancak Temple in North Kuta on Sunday, February 2nd.
The Djibouti tourist was last seen leaving a guest house in Legian with a companion to take a swim at 5:30 pm on Saturday.
The companion told police how Barkadleh encountered difficulties fighting strong currents. While his companion carried the exhausted man to shore, physically spent he asked the man to try to swim the remaining distance to the shore. A short time later, Barkadleh disappeared in the waves. Surfers immediately joined the search for the man to no avail, only to abandon the search after sunset.
Police were notified and a Search and Rescue Team who commenced a search at 8:00 pm with no success.
At 8:45 am the following morning the search resumed with the man’s lifeless body quickly discovered floating in the off-shore shallows.
Barkadleh’s body was transported to Denpasar’s Sanglah General Hospital for forensic examination and final disposition.
