It’s Location! Location! New Location

Popular Bumbu Bali Restaurant Opens in New and Improved Location in Nusa Dua

More than two decades ago, Heinz von Holzen and his wife Puji opened Bumbu Bali Restaurant and Cooking School in Tanjung Benoa. A professionally-trained Swiss Chef, Heinz had already spent years on the island photographically and gastronomically exploring the mysteries of the Balinese kitchen that, amazingly, were still unknown at the time to even the Balinese. Employed as the Food and Beverage Director at a leading 5-star hotel, Heinz organized Saturday cooking competitions among hotel staff who brought favorite Balinese recipes borrowed from their mothers’ kitchens. With staff hailing from every area and corner of the island, unique dishes made from exotic local ingredients were cooked and photographed while Heinz carefully recorded recipes and cooking methods.

The delicious trove of Balinese recipes recorded in the process on the Saturday staff cooking jamborees became the core of the menu at the Bumbu Bali Restaurant and a number of authoritative cook books on Balinese cuisine.

Heinz and Puji, and now helped by their son, Putu Fabian, have had an unwavering commitment to authentic Balinese cuisine made with only the finest ingredients. Enjoying unrivaled success in the Balinese restaurant sector,  Bumbu Bali even won the “Best Balinese Restaurant Award” presented by the Province of Bali – a remarkable achievement for a man cooking local cuisine in his adopted land.

After establishing “Bumbu Bali II” near the original restaurant, and, when the 20-year lease ran out on the original location, the von Holzen clan went in search of new premises, acquiring a hillside location on the perimeter road behind the ITCD (Nusa Dua Complex), across the road from the Surya Husada Hospital.

While fans and devotees of Bumbu Bali would argue “you can’t improve on perfection,” the new location offers a number of distinct improvements:

  • The choice of al fresco or interior dining with full air conditioning.
  • A bar area for snacking and chats over drinks with friends and colleagues
  • A separate private dining and meeting facility on the second floor for up to 40 guests.
  • Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner – all serving authentic Indonesian cuisine.
  • The fabled Cooking classes (Also available at Bumbu Bali II) for a maximum of 8 participants
  • A changing art exhibition, including photography by Heinz and Putu Fabian von Holzen.
  • 6 third-level Guest rooms with private-ensuite, air conditioning, WiFi, TV and daily breakfast starting from US$80.00 ++
