Lombok Man Sent to Prison for One Year for Stealing Less than US$ 3
A 27-year-old man from the Island of Lombok, Rival Wibowo, has been sentenced to prison for one year in a Bali court after telling judges and prosecutors that he was reduced to stealing because of hunger pangs.
As reported by beritabali.com , the DenpasarCourt handed down the sentence on Monday, July 9th after hearing how Wibowo pilfered the contents of a small purse owned by a worker at the Ke and Me Restaurant at Jalan Gatot Subroto Timor No. 187 in Denpasar. The theft, that took place in the early morning hours of Sunday, April 8, 2018, netted the man a total of Rp. 20,000 and one U.S. Dollar.
The unemployed man looking for work arrived in Bali only the night before after hitching a ride on a goods truck from Lombok. Penniless, Wibowo slept on the door steps of a shop where his hunger roused him from his sleep. Walking the streets of Bali’s capital before sunrise he spotted the purse on the table of the restaurant. His thievery was detected by a restaurant employee who gave chase before apprehending the man and bringing him to the East Denpasar Police Precinct.
