Head of Denpasar, Bali Police Command Tells Police to Shoot to Kill Armed Criminals Who Resist Arrest

Ruddi Setiawan who is head of the Denpasar Police Resort has made a strong threat again street criminals in Bali in the run-up to the Christmas and New Year Holiday.

Setiawan has told his complement of police officer not to hesitate to shoot-to-kill any snatch thief and pick pocket who offers any armed resistance in the course of being arrested.

Quoted by Balipost.com, Setiawan said on Thursday, November 29, 2018: “We will take the firm action of shooting (these criminals) in accordance with established procedures. Whenever we encounter armed resistance we will shoot them dead.”

Setiawan said that over the last week officers from the Denpasar Police Resort have arrested robbers, snatch thieves and pickpockets. Those arrested were committing crimes in Kuta, West Denpasar, South Denpasar, and East Denpasar.

“Combined teams from law enforcement are undertaking special operations every night to catch criminals working the streets. This is in keeping with the order of the Provincial Chief of Police for serious action to be taken against street crime,” he said.

Setiawan revealed to the press the recent arrest of a robber posing as a PLN (State Power Board) worker. The thieves, identified as Rudi Kurniawan (29) and Roni Sosilo (32) were prevented from a robbery on Jalan Teuku Umar Barat (Malboro) X, No. 8A, Denpasar Barat when the targeted victim, Sumiyanti (65), managed to escape and raise an alarm that allowed local residents to detain the men. When the police arrived at the scene of the crime, police say they were compelled to shoot both men in the legs.

Meanwhile officers from South Denpasar capture a snatch thief, Santoso (33) at the Gilimanuk Ferry Crossing in Jembrana, West Bali on Tuesday, November 27, 2018.  The Australian victim, Jospehine Shu-Fang Chin had earlier been robbed on Jalan Mertasari in Sanur. The woman lost a made snatched by the thieves containing two IPhones, AU$400, credit cards, eye glasses and a driver’s license. When police tracked Santoso down he resisted arrest causing police to shoot him twice, once in each leg.
