Hundreds Demonstrate in Bali for Worker’s Rights and Protection
May Day Celebrations in Bali on May 1, 2019 included peaceful parades and demonstrations on behalf of workers’ rights and welfare.
As reported by Beritabali.com, hundreds of members of non-governmental organization gathering under the banner of the United Bali Workers Movement (Gerakan Buruh Bali Bersatu) gathered in front of the Governor’s office in Renon, Central Denpasar.
The secretary of the Federation of Independent Union Workers in Bali (FSPMRB), Ida I Dewa Made Rai Budi Darsana, spoke saying his organization, as one of the union groups in Bali, is concerned for the current condition of workers in Bali that, he contends, is rife with violations of labour regulations, contract violations, and intimidation of contract workers.
He said the lack of supervision by the Government meant that employment contracts were being fraudulently used to violate workers’ rights under Indonesian law. Meanwhile, worker who try to organize unions in their place of employment are thwarted in doing so by outsourcing of employment strategies and outright intimidation.
Darsana called on the Provincial Government of Bali to create regional regulations that will extend special protection to Balinese workers.
The peaceful May Day demonstration in Bali saw participation by a number of unions and student groups.
