Bali Guides Protest Lenient Handling by Police of Criminal Assault by Illegal Guide Working in Bali
Local tour guides in Bali are voicing their anger at a decision by the Kuta police to charge a foreigner working illegally as a Mandarin-speaking tour guide with a misdemeanor in connection with the April 5, 2018, physical assault of a local guide. To formally register their dissatisfaction, guides from the Mandarin-speaking division of the Indonesian Guide Association (HPI-Bali) and legal representatives of the victim visited the Kuta Police Precinct on Wednesday, April 18, 2018.

Beritabali.com reports the delegation urged the police to look at the attack and other physical assaults on HPI-Bali members they claim are connected to the Chinese national, Si Ahui, working illegally in Bali as a tour guide.

The delegation also called on the police to look into the suspected use of local gang member Made Yastono (33) who they alleged was paid to attack the HPI-Bali member.

Meanwhile, police are defending their handling of the matter saying the facts of the case are consistent with witnesses’ statements that depicted a simple shoving match between the Chinese foreigner and the local guide. In response, the delegation told police that they have additional witnesses prepared to testify and prove the incident qualifies for more serious felon criminal charges against the Chinese national.

Police told the delegation that they were prepared to receive additional witness statements that would prove the case exceeded the limited of simple misdemeanor assault.
