Siarhei’s Last Tragic Selfie

Belarusian Man Believed to be Making a Selfie Before Falling Fatally into the Sea Near Bali’s Uluwatu Temple

A 34-year-old man from Belarus fell to his death from the steep limestone cliffs near Bali Pura Ulawatu on Sunday, October 27, 2019, at approximately 6:00 pm.

Police are investigating the incident in which Siarhei Barbushin fell some 130-meters onto the rocky shores of the Indian Ocean. Some reports suggest Barbushin was making a “selfie” before falling off the cliff.

While the lifeless body of the Belarus tourist was briefly visible on the shore, strong waves quickly swept across the rocks and carried it out to sea before rescuers could descend the vertical face cliff. An extensive sea search had failed to find any trace of the tourist 5 days after the incident.

Meanwhile, the head of the village (Bendesa) of Pecatu, I Made Sumerta, told Nusa Bali that a major Bali Hindu religious rite is planned at the site of the accident to “cleanse” the area and return cosmic balance. The place where the incident occurred is only 500 meters west of one of Bali’s major temples – Pura Luhur Uluwatu. Such ceremonies, however, are usually only held after the body of the victim is recovered.

The victim’s rented car was found parked at the top of the cliff.

Siarhei Barbushin was a registered guest at Villa Mango in Kerobokan at the time of the incident.
