Indonesian President Calls for Visa-Free Facilities to Between ASEAN and South Korea.

The State News Agency ANTARA quotes Indonesian President Joko Widodo, speaking at the Summit commemorating the 30th Anniversary of ASEAN and South Korean cooperation, said connectivity between the people of ASEAN and South Korea needs to be supported by a policy allowing visa-free visits.

“In the future, we will promote greater connectivity between the people of ASEAN and South Korea with a visa-free facility in order to support the target of 15 million total visitors between South Korea and ASEAN,” said the Indonesian President.

Indonesia’s Foreign Minister Retno Marsudo, who was accompanying President Joko Widodo at the Summit in Busan, South Korea, told the press that issues of “hard connectivity” such as improving infrastructure and “soft connectivity” must both be addressed in the years ahead.

“Soft connectivity,” on the other hand, addresses people-to-people elements such free visa facilities between ASEAN and South Korea. Also included in “soft connectivity”, said the Indonesian Foreign Minister, are matters related to education that will help cement sustainable relations with South Korea.

Retno said that President Joko Widodo’s call for reciprocal visa-free facilities was greeted enthusiastically by the President of South Korea Moon Jae-in and other leaders from ASEAN.

Retno added that now a consensus on visa policies appears in hand, the next step is for follow-up meetings between ASEAN members and South Korean to be held in order to move towards implementation of such a policy.
