TV Production Professional Named Head of Indonesian Tourism

Wishnutama Kusbandio Named Indonesian Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy

A pioneering Indonesia media mogul, Wishnutama Kusbandio, has been appointed to serve as the Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy in Indonesian President Joko Widodo’s new cabinet. The appointment was announced on Wednesday, October 23, 2019, at the State Palace in Jakarta.

Wishnutama replaces outgoing Tourism Minister Arief Yahya.

Wishnutama was born in Jayapura, Papua on May 4, 1970. He is the founder and CEO of NET TV. He attended high school in the Kooralbyn International School in Queensland and the Singapore International School.

He attended the Military College of Vermont at Norwich University, USA going on to study communications and liberal arts at Mount Ida College and Emerson College in Boston. In New York, he undertook a production course for television at Emerson College and GE Southeast Asia Executive Program at Crotonville, New York.

Wishnutama is an avid amateur photographer.

Before returning to Indonesia he worked for a period at New England Cable News and WHDH7 in Boston.

His Indonesian television career began in 1994 when he worked at Indosiar TV as the Supervisor of On-Air Promotion. A year later he moved to the production division working as a Production Assistant. A fast-rising star, he was soon named Production Manager and is credited with bringing to air a number of top programs including Pesta, Gebyar BCA, Patroli, Satu Jam Bersama, and Saksi.

In 2001, the future Minister of Tourism moved to Trans TV where he was named head of productions. Within two years, he had risen to become the Operational Director for Trans TV. Another year later, he was elevated to Managing Director of Trans 7. During his tenure at Trans Corp the network introduced a number of extremely popular programs, including Extravaganza, Dunia Lain, Termehek-Mehek, Opera van Java, On The Spot, and Indonesia Mencari Bakat. Along the way Trans TV won the Asian Television Award and the Panasonic Award.

Wishnutama was named The Best CEO in Indonesia 2010 by SWA Magazine and Indonesia Marketing Champion 2015 for the Broadcast, TV Pay & Media sector by MarkPlus.

In 2013 he established NET TV (NET Mediatama Televisi).

He was entrusted to become Creative Director and for the elaborate and internationally-acclaimed opening and closing ceremonies for the 2018 Asian Games held in Indonesia.

The new Minister is also an avid musician, founding and performing in the Soulful Corp Band.
