PATA EUROPE TARGETS LUCRATIVE OUTBOUND MARKETS
Several sales opportunities are being offered by
the PATA Europe Division this fall. The PATA Baltic Countries Road show

PATA STALWART MR. ALOIS
X. FASSBIND DIES
Mr. Alois X. Fassbind, known as "Mr. Pattaya," died
last week in Thailand. As Executive Vice President of the Royal Cliff
Beach Resort, Mr. Fassbind was an active PATA member serving on the Board
of Directors and on a number of PATA Committees during more than 20 years
of involvement with the Association. His hotel played host to the 1996
PATA Travel Mart. Mr. Fassbind was honoured in 1997 with a PATA Award
of Merit. He was also very active in assisting the elderly and the young
in Pattaya, providing personal support for the local orphanage and old
people's home, according to Mr. Luzi Matzig, long-time friend and PATA
colleague. "Fassbind will be greatly missed by PATA," said Mr. Joseph
A. McInerney, PATA CEO. "We all can learn from his leadership and compassion."
Mr. Fassbind was a frequent visitor to Bali where
he had many admirers and friends.

CONDE NAST TRAVEL SURVEY
America's leading travel magazine, CONDE NAST TRAVELLER,
conducted a "Truth in Travel Survey" among its group of U.S. sophisticated
and high income readers surveying their views on Asian travel. The profile
of CONDE NAST readers showed a median age of 53.5 years and a median household
income of US$129,300.
The U.S. economy continues to soar with the strong
dollar against most other currencies making overseas travel by Americans
a bargain. It is estimated that there are 78 million "baby boomers" in
their peak earning and travel years.
Of the 2,000 readers who responded to the survey,
50% had travelled to Asia in the last 3 years and the remaining 50% had
travelled to other overseas destinations in the same period. Some of
the results of the CONDE NAST survey were very interesting and have relevance
for Bali and Indonesia:
> Of the Asian travellers, only 16% had visited Indonesia
(7th on the list) on their most recent trip aboard. Hong Kong was the
most popular destination with 39% having visited that destination most
recently, followed by Singapore at 27%, Australia at 26% , China at 25%,
Thailand at 23%, and Japan at 23%.
> 31% of the respondents indicated they were planning
a trip to Asia in the coming 12 months and another 23% said they were
still considering such a trip.
> The survey found that most travellers were not
deterred by local conditions in planning their trip . Nonetheless, when
considering Indonesia for a holiday 15% of the respondents expressed
concerns over the Indonesian economy, 21 % regarding the Indonesian environment,
and 15% were worried about the Indonesian political situation in planning
their possible trip to this country.
> When respondents were asked to rank their dream
Asia/Pacific destination, Indonesia ranked 8th on the list with 25% naming
it as their preferred dream locale. Australia topped the list at 75%,
followed by New Zealand at 74%, Singapore 41%, Thailand and Hong Kong
at 40%, Japan at 34%, and China at 28%.
> Asia Pacific still ranked the highest when people
were asked to pick their fantasy destination anywhere in the world at
49%. followed by 25% for Europe, 11% for Africa, and 5% for Latin America.
TOURIST SECURITY-- GROWING
PROBLEM, FEW SOLUTIONS
Mr. Imtiaz Muqbil, Executive Editor, Travel Impact
in Bangkok latest newsletter raises the problem faced by Bali and other
tourism destinations world-wide in ensuring their guests are safe. Some
excepts from that report:
"When giant tour operator Japan Travel Bureau issued
its annual survey results on August 1, 1998, it contained a startling
fact: 42.6% of respondents cited 'security concerns' as a reason for fearing
travel abroad. This was up from 32.9% of respondents in 1997 and 28.7%
in 1994. Said JTB, "Last year's news from overseas was characterised by
events such as the terrorist attack in Luxor, Egypt, haze pollution and
political unrest in Indonesia, successive aircraft accidents in various
countries, the ICE incident in Germany, and sundry other crimes and untoward
events, many of which involved Japanese tourists." "The JTB message was
clear. While overall Japanese outbound travel is expected to drop from
about 16.8 million in 1997 to about 16 million this year due to the economic
slowdown, elderly people are still travelling in good numbers and spending
well. But, said JTB, "guaranteeing safety is a fundamental precondition
of travel, and in the elderly segment in particular, concerns about security
and safety abroad were frequently cited ... among those who were hesitant
about taking an overseas trip." As national tourism organisations battle
it out for market share in a diminishing Japanese outbound market, those
representing countries with a higher perception of safety will have the
