DEMONSTRATIONS - BALINESE
"Om, Sarve Sukhino Bhavantu" or "May all of nature
and all its creatures live in happiness" was the mantra chanted by more
than 5,000 participants at the cental Puputan field in Denpasar last Friday
attending the "PAUM II" - Summit Action for Hindu Demands II.
This is political action - Balinese style.
Led in prayers by Hindu Priests, the "protestors"
walked to the Puputan Field in Balinese costume accompanied by traditional
"belanjur" orchestras in order to attend a ceremony at which mantras were
chanted, incense burned and speeches of reconciliation heard.
The theme was "reformation," but a form of reformation
more sweeping in its character than the type called for in other, distant
cities of the Republic. While the Bali-Hindu worshippers are no less fervent
in their calls for political reform and social justice, they rightly and
wisely see "the problem" within the larger context of the need for reform
of the human spirit. Accordingly, the thousands who gathered last Friday
prayed to God for unity and social equity founded on love and genuine
concern for our fellow human beings.
While some had predicted outbreaks of violence at
Friday's "pray-in." They we disappointed: They were also ignorant of the
peaceful ways of this small island set in an emerald sea.
GARUDA LONDON UNDERLINES
THE IMPORTANCE OF BALI
In a travel dialogue held in London last Saturday,
John Moxey, Sales Manager - Garuda for the U.K. and Ireland, stated that
Bali is still the most popular destination in the Far East for U.K. travellers
followed by Australia and Bangkok.
According to Moxey as reported in the Bali Post,
Bali has strong potential to act as a distribution point for onward travel
to Australia from the United Kingdom. Because of the potential of this
market, Bali's tourism industry must undertake a professional and coordinated
approach to the U.K., according to Moxey.
The U.K. market to Bali has increased almost 50%
in 1998 with Garuda reporting an average 85% occupancy rate on London
to Bali flights. Garuda operates 5 flights every week on this route, 3
of which are direct services to Bali.
NEW MAGAZINE LAUNCHED
"Hello Bali" a new monthly publication for tourist
visiting Bali has been launched this month. Available from local hotels,
this publication is packed with articles on local culture and special
events occurring on the island.
Expected early in 1999 is another exciting publication
"Bali and Beyond" which will be produced by Bali Promo.
Both magazines are expected to fill a gap in information
for local tourists visiting Bali following the disappearance earlier this
year of the publication "Bali Kini."
