Travel and Leisure Magazine has created a list of what they consider the “21 Coolest Hotel Bars in the World,” ranking Bali’s Ayana Resort’s Rock Bar as number 4 on its list of favorite hotel watering holes.
Reputation, style, atmosphere, and range of liquors and wine on offer are all considered by Travel and Leisure in compiling the list. Livers, sadly, were sacrificed to some degree in compiling their list of the 21 best places to imbibe.
Ranked number one on the list was Bemelmans Bar at The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, in New York City. Described as “an old school New York Bar” with waiters dressed in tuxedos, Bemelmans’ has been a New York institution for 75 years. The bar is named for children’s books illustrator and author Ludwig Bemelman. One of his murals decorates the bar’s wall where crooning jazz artists and expertly-prepared martinis combine to create a quintessential New York State of Mind.
The Rock Bar at The Ayana Resort on Jimbaran Bay in Bali joins Travel and Leisure’s pantheon of the best hotel bars, ranked at #4. Dramatically tucked away on a rocky cliff face and suspended above the waves of the Indian Ocean, access to the bar is by inclinator or stairs. The trip down the cliff is transformative in location and atmosphere. Glass blocks of furnaced glass were used to construct an azure-colored bar juxtaposed against an deep blue sea.
A DJ enthroned in a stone cubbyhole provides the musical ambient while guests sip cocktails listening to the music and the ebbing tides.
