Bali Airport Opens Sophisticated MRO Hub

A “green” aircraft repair and maintenance facility has commenced operations at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport. The maintenance hub results from a joint venture between FL Technics Indonesia and Angkasa Pura Property.

PT Avia Technics Dirgantara, also known as FL Technics Indonesia, formally inaugurated its new Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Facility on Thursday evening, 29 November 2024. The opening ceremony coincided with the 8th Anniversary of FL Technics Indonesia.

Quoted by the State News Agency Antara, Martynas Grigas, a director of FL Technics Indonesia, said: “This latest expansion is designed to enhance our capabilities in serving the aviation industry,”

The environmentally friendly maintenance and repair technology now available at Bali’s airport includes the Mototok Spacer 8600 NG, a Towbarless Aircraft Pushback Tug Machine with zero emissions. The machine is used for high-precision towing and pushback of aircraft. Moreover, the Mototok Spacer 8600 NG uses a 96V AC electric motor with a battery charge requiring only three hours, supporting up to 30 pushbacks per charge.

The engine of the Mototok Spacer 8600 NG has a maximum thrust of 105 tons and a front wheel load capacity of up to 11 tons, making it suitable for use on Airbus A 320 and Boeing 737 aircraft. The tool also has a remote control system, integrated display, internet-based performance monitoring (IoT interface), and protection against operational errors, allowing the team to work more efficiently, precisely, and effectively.

The aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility covers 17,000 square meters and can simultaneously serve six medium-bodied aircraft, primarily focusing on servicing Boeing and Airbus equipment. The hangar can provide fast service for aircraft that experience sudden technical problems, thus minimizing aircraft downtime.

The new  MRO Facility in Bali also features a 24/7 Aircraft-on-ground (AOG) service that can immediately respond to any sudden technical problem experienced by aircraft visiting Bali, ensuring minimum delays and downtime for their clients’ aircraft.

FL Technics Indonesia, part of the Avia Solutions Group, is a global aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) service provider operating in Indonesia since 2016. The company is one of the world’s largest aerospace business companies based in Ireland and employs 12,000 employees worldwide.

Meanwhile, the President Director of PT Angkasa Pura Properti (APP), Ristiyanto Eko Wibowo, added that the hangar facility for MRO services is the first of its kind to be opened at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport.

The environmentally friendly aircraft workshop began operating at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport on Thursday, November 28, 2024.

FL Technics Indonesia’s MRO facility is located at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Tangerang on the outskirts of Jakarta and has been operating since 2016 on an area of 20,000 square meters.

Commenting from a Bali perspective, Wibowo hopes that the Bali MRO can develop and become a center for the Asia Pacific and Australian regions, serving the many international airlines that serve Bali routes.

“Bali Airport is already known as a major international destination and is a hub for flights to Australia, Hong Kong, and elsewhere. The Bali MRO Facility is part of an aviation ecosystem that should be at Ngurah Rai Airport, serving A to Z of aviation needs,” he added.

Wibowo hopes that the presence of the MRO facility in Bali will accelerate the aircraft fleet maintenance process, reduce dependence on foreign services, and positively impact airlines operating in Indonesia. In addition, the facility, built in less than a year, is also expected to benefit the local economy by creating jobs.
