Bali Airport Screening for Pneumonia

The growing global outbreak of Mycoplasma Pneumonia in Mainland China and beyond has piqued the attention of health officials at Bali Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Quoted by Tribun-Bai.com on 07 December 2023, the interim general manager of Angkasa Pura I, Iwan Novi Hantoro, commented, “This (outbreak) has become a point of interest, bearing in mind that the I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport is the primary gateway for the Island of Bali.”

Angkasa Pura, Bali’s Airport Authority, is coordinating with the Bali Airport Quarantine Office to mitigate any potential spread of Mycoplasma Pneumonia in Bali.

The Ngurah Rai Airport Health Office has issued a letter to airlines and other airport offices addressing how to prevent the spread of Mycoplasma Pneumonia.

Iwan Hantoro said that as an initial mitigating step, as many as five thermoscanner units to measure the body temperature of air passengers have been installed in the airport’s international arrival and departure sections. Health department officials are also in place to examine passengers displaying any symptoms of respiratory illness.

Iwan quickly added: “At this point, no one has been found suffering from Mycoplasma Pneumonia at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Aiport.”

Should any arriving passenger be found positively infected with Mycoplasma Pneumonia, they would immediately be isolated from other passengers for handling by the Port Health Office.

The symptoms associated with Mycoplasma Pneumonia are sore throat, cough, fever, exhaustion, and headache. Experts say the respiratory ailment can be easily spread through human contact in crowded spaces.

Airline ground staff and officials working at the airport have been advised to practice personal health protocols that include wearing surgical masks, washing hands, and practicing self-distancing.

To date, Indonesia has uncovered 6 cases of Mycoplasma Pneumonia in children.
