Bali Ocean Swim Attracts 143 Participants

143 people, comprised mainly of Indonesians and expatriate residents of Bali, participated in the Bali Ocean Swim event held on Kuta Beach on Sunday, 03 October 2021.

The Event Director and Bali Sports Foundation Founder, Rodney J. Holt, told NusaBali.com, “The 11th Bali Ocean Swim is a charity event to fund and support sporting activities for the disabled while also helping revive tourism on Bali.”

The Open Ocean Swimming Event was conducted over three distances. 109 people swam in the 1.2-kilometer swim, 26 people did the 5-kilometer swim, and 8 people covered the most challenging 10-kilometer route.

Holt said high waves on Kuta Beach on the day of the event offered an added challenge to swimmers participating in Bali Ocean Swim.

Any funds raised from the Bali Ocean Swim are given to the Bali Sports Foundation (Yayasan Damai Olahraga Bali) to support 17 different athletics activities for children suffering from disabling conditions that include autism, down syndrome, mentally disabled, blindness, and deafness.

Past Bali Ocean Swim Events have attracted a large number of foreign tourists prevented from traveling to Bali for the 2021 Bali Ocean Swim due to continuing travel and visa restrictions related to COVID-19.

A noteworthy performance at the Bali Ocean Swim Event was turned in by Indonesian Dedy Winata who, although afflicted with polio, finished 1st Place in the Male Masters Division on the 1.2 Km Event. Dedy, who outpaced more able-bodied swimmers, received the Seth Richardson Award at this year’s Bali Ocean Swim. The award is given in remembrance of the late Richardson, a Human Rights Lawyer in Sydney, who took up Ocean Swimming after suffering severe back injuries. Richardson help to establish the Bali Sports Foundation by writing its constitution and introduced the Foundation’s Founder to Ocean Swimming.
