Balinese Reject Floating Restaurant on Surf Beach

Villagers from Keramas, Blahbatuh, Gianyar are protesting and rejecting plans to build a floating restaurant north of Denpasar on the Island’s eastern shoreline.

As reported by Beritabali.com, local citizens convened a protest meeting and small demonstration in front of the Keramas Village Hall.

The proposed floating restaurant at the center of the protest is planned to be erected on the shore of Keramas Beach. The actual construction of the floating restaurant has not commenced. Developers are currently working to socialize the concept to the local community.

Residents in Keramas express their concerns that the existence of the floating restaurant will change the condition and configuration of the waves that attract international surfers to Keramas Beach. Keramas Beach hosted the World Surf League (WSL) event in May 2019 and remains a popular surfing location.

Community Protests at Keramas Beach

Keramas Village Head, Gusti Putu Sarjana, confirmed widespread objections among residents to the proposed floating restaurant.
