BIH Won’t Accept BPJS Medical Insurance

Finance.detik.com reports that the Bali International Hospital (BIH), scheduled to open in early 2024, despite being a state-owned medical enterprise, will not treat patients under the State Health Insurance Medicare Program (BPJS).

The CEO of PT Pertamina Medika (Indonesian Healthcare Corporation (IHC), Mira Dyah Wahyuni, defended the decision to not accept BPJS patients at BIH on the basis that the new hospital is being developed to attract patients from the middle to upper classes.

Mira explained that the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) is seeking to attract patients living in Indonesia and seeking medical treatment abroad. BUMN estimates that annually some 2 million Indonesians seek medical treatment abroad. Adding, “To act consistently with the target market we seek, we (BIH) will not accept BPJS patients.”

Mira said many other hospitals in Indonesia seek to serve the middle to lower-market segments. She said BIH wishes to refrain from competing in that market segment.

BIH wishes to operate not only as a hospital but also as a wellness and geriatric care center.

BUMN Minister Erick Thohir is working to attract Indonesian doctors who have trained abroad to come back to Indonesia to practice medicine and share their skills with other doctors. The Minister says 10 Indonesian doctors practicing medicine abroad have already signed up to work at BHI.
