Family Seek Commutation for Bali Bomber

The surviving family of convicted Bali Bomber Ali Imron, who was convicted and imprisoned for life for his active involvement in the 12 October 2005 Bombing of a Bali Nightspot that killed 202 people and injured 209 more, is appealing to President Prabowo Subianto for a commutation of Imron’s life sentence.

As reported by Detik.com, Ali Imron’s family, led by Ali’s mother, Traiyem,  is formally requesting Presidential clemency against Imron’s life sentence handed down for his central involvement in a ghastly terrorist act.

The brother of Ali Imron, Ali Fauzi, told the press on Thursday, 05 December 2024: “My Mother has spent the past 5 years begging me to arrange a formal request for a pardon on behalf of Ali Imron.”

Fauzi, the founder and chairman of the Peace Circle Foundation (Yayasan Lingkar Perdamaian – YLP), says he has repeatedly requested a pardon for his imprisoned brother. On each occasion, his request for a pardon has failed despite detailed documentation support, including an appeal to the National Agency for the Suppression of Terrorism (BNPT).

The head of the Cipinang Prison, where Ali Imron is imprisoned, has endorsed the request for clemency. Statements of support have also been written by the Director General of Prisons, the National Chief of Police, and the Head of BNPT. These requests for clemency have been placed five times on the desk of the President at the National Palace.

Ali Fauzi insists he will continue to appeal to President Prabowo to secure a reduced sentence for his brother Ali Imron. He beseeched that the President would hear the pleas of Ali’s mother, who is now almost 100 years old.

“Hopefully, President Prabowo will respond positively to the request of Tariyem’s mother, whose son, Ali Imron, has been in prison for almost 22 years. I cry almost every day as I hear complaints from my aged mother. She said your two brothers have been shot dead; there is one brother who hasn’t come home and hasn’t been released. But that is indeed the government’s authority,” admitted Ali Fauzi, referring to Ali Imron’s two brothers who were executed for their involvement in the Bali Bombing.

Ali Fauzi confessed that he sometimes feels jealous when other prisoners sentenced to life or even the death penalty are finally released. He hopes that the government will strike a balance in the treatment of drug convicts and terrorist convicts.

Ali Fauzi added that his brother Ali Imron has significantly contributed to efforts to overcome terrorism and radicalism by promoting a deradicalization program. Ali Fauzi says his mother is now paralyzed and hopes that Ali Imron can be freed.

“Mas Ali Imron has forsaken his terrorist credentials and put his life at some risk by promoting religious moderation and deradicalization – acts that insulted JI (Jamaah Islamiyah) and ISIS groups. But Fauzi has persevered, and, as a result, hundreds are following Mas Ali Imron’s teaching and returning to become patriotic, law-abiding Indonesians. Well, I also think there needs to be appreciation from the government, especially President Prabowo,” Fauzi explained.

Ali Fauzi reported that the last time his mother met Ali Imron was almost 5 years ago. He hopes that his brother can be released before his mother dies.
