Because Christmas and New Year are the times for goodwill and sharing amongst men and women, please consider pausing briefly during this busy period to give the true gift of life by donating blood when in Bali.
Bali’s Central Red Cross Blood Bank, located at The Professor Dr. I Gusti Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar, runs critically low on blood products. Live Updated inventory of blood products at Denpasar Red Cross Blood Donor Center.
During the annual year-end holidays, the number of donors declines at Bali’s Blood Donor Center. At the same time, because of the high rate of holiday traffic accidents, the medical demand for blood increases sharply, with demands for blood consistently exceeding supply at year’s end.
I Ketut Priggantara, chairman of the Bali Chapter of the Indonesian Blood Donor Association (PDDI-Bali), quoted by Balipost.com, said on 26 December 2023: “Blood donations, both on an individual or group donor basis, is greatly reduced (at year’s end) because the public is on holiday and busy preparing for New Year celebrations.”
Priggantara said blood supplies are low at every transfusion center (UTD) in Bali. Adding: “Especially for blood groups, O and AB stocks are low.” The PDDI-Bali Chairman is urging regular blood donors to take the time to come to the Blood Donation Center at Professor Ngoerah General Hospital.
Blood donations are critical for patients and their families for people suffering from a range of ailments, including cancer, leukemia, operations, and caesarian births.
Priggantara underlined how the need for blood transfusions peaks on New Year’s Eve when traffic accidents occur due to the misuse of alcohol and drunk driving. He urges the public to readjust its views that insist on alcohol consumption as part of any holiday celebrations.
He hopes that people will consider being a blood donor instead of partying to excess with alcoholic beverages.
At the same time, there are many benefits to donating blood. Not only is the actual blood donation the difference between life and death for those receiving donations, but blood donors enjoy an improved metabolism as they regenerate blood cells. Also, at the time when blood donations are accepted, health screening is performed for hepatitis B and C, Syphilis, HIV, and AIDS.
