NusaBali reports that The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation will formally inaugurate a new direct sea lane connecting the Port of Ketapang, Banyuwangi, East Java, and the Port of Lembar in West Lombok on Christmas Day, 25 December 2020.
The Minister of Transportation, Budi Karya Sumadi, said the direct ferry link between East Java and Lombok would reduce traffic congestion allowing the public to avoid driving across Bali on their journey to Lombok. “Those traveling to Lombok (from Java) do not need to travel by road but can go (by ferry) directly to Lembar (Lombok). This will begin operating on 25 December,” said Minister Budi Karya at a media gathering for PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry in Jakarta on Monday, 14 December 2020.
Sounding a similar note, the Director-General of Land Transportation Budi Setiyadi said he hoped that the new ferry route would reduce tourist traffic via the port of Gimilanuk in West Bali and Padang Bai, in East Bali.
Budi confirmed that several operators are prepared to deploy their armadas on the new route.
