Joey Alexander Returns to Bali on 21st Sept

Jazz Superstar Joey Alexander Returns to Stage of Padma Musical Series Saturday, 21 September 2024

On Saturday, 21 September 2024, Padma Musical Series welcomes back the Bali-born International Jazz Performer Joey Alexander to the Plumeria Ballroom of the Padma Legian Resort in Bali.

Born in Bali in 2003, only 11 years later, by 2014, Joey’s parent had already recognized their son’s precocious musicality and resolved to uproot to Indonesia’s capital of Jakarta and its booming jazz community. When he was eight, he played for Herbie Hancock during a visit to the capital. Hancock was in town on a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Tour. At the time, Hancock told the wide-eyed then 8-year-old boy that he believed in him, with Alexander later recalling  that was “the day I decided to dedicate my childhood to jazz.”

News of the young piano-playing wunderkind quickly spread. By age nine, Joey had already performed in Ukraine, where he won the Grand Prize at the Master Jam Fest in 2013.

A year later, at the wise old age of 10, Joey thrilled fellow musicians and a worldwide television audience when Wynton Marsalis invited him to play at Jazz at Lincoln Center. By 11 (2016), Joey had already recorded his first of three Grammy-nominated albums. Later, Joey Alexander became the first Indonesian to perform at the Montreal and Newport Jazz Festivals and to chart on Billboard 200 when his performance of My Favorite Things peaked at #59.

He has triumphantly performed at jazz festivals in Odessa, Montreal, Newport, Copenhagen, Montreux, Detroit, Mackinaw Island, Julliard School of Music, New Orleans, and Jakarta. Joey has also performed for President Obama at the U.S. White House, played for a global television audience live from Lincoln Center, and “wowed” a sold-out engagement at Carnegie Hall.

At Jazz Festivals in Odessa, Montreal, Newport, Copenhagen, Montreux, Detroit, Mackinaw Island, Julliard School of Music, New Orleans, and Jakarta, he has consistently time and again brought audiences and fellow musicians to their feet. Joey has performed for President Obama at The US White House, played for a global television audience live from Lincoln Center, and “wowed” a sold-out engagement at Carnegie Hall.

Growing demand keeps Joey Alexander touring and performing around the globe from his new home base in Baltimore, Maryland. In November 2023, a half-year before his 21st birthday, he released his seventh album, Continuance.
