Me and My Missing Shadow on 27 February

In astronomical terms, “culmination” is when the Sun crosses directly over a specific Earth meridian.

A predictable recurring periodic event, a culmination of the Sun, will occur in Bali on Tuesday, 27 February 2024, according to projections published by the Badung Region of the Metereoogy, Climate, and Geophysics Center (BBMKG-Bali). When this happens, the Sun is directly overhead a specific locale and is often connected with higher-than-normal temperatures produced.

NusaBali.com reports that Bali will undergo “culmination” in several locations between 12:30 and 12:25 pm on 27 and 28 February 2024 on days traditionally dubbed as “days without shadows.” This phenomenon occurs when the Sun is at its zenith in the sky. This year’s “day without shadows” will be experienced at varying times in Bali from February to March 2024 in locations that include Mengwi, Tabanan, Gianyar, Klungkung, Bangli, Amlapura, Negara, and Singaraja. The “no shadow effect” lasts for approximately one minute’s duration.

Chairman of (BBMKG-Bali) Geophysical Operations Management Working Group, Ein Nuzulul Laily, explained that culmination or transit or “istiwa’ is a phenomenon when the Sun is precisely at the highest position in the sky. When the Sun’s declination is the same as the observer’s latitude, the phenomenon is called a “major culmination.” At that time, the Sun will be directly above the observer’s head or at the zenith point. As a result, the image of an upright object will appear to ‘disappear’ because it overlaps with the object itself. Therefore, the day of the main culmination is also known as the day without a shadow.

The temperature may be slightly hotter than usual. People in Bali and the surrounding area can see this phenomenon, watching the shadows almost disappear when the Sun reaches its peak in the sky.

Apart from that, Ein Nuzulul Laily said that this phenomenal process occurs because the plane of the earth’s equator or the plane of the earth’s rotation does not precisely coincide with the plane of the ecliptic or the plane of the earth’s revolution, so the position of the Sun from the earth will appear to continue to change throughout the year between 23.5o N to 23.5o North Latitude. 23.5o South Latitude. This is known as the apparent daily motion of the Sun. This year, the Sun will be directly at the equator on March 20, 2024, at 10.06 WIB, and September 22, 2024, at 19.43 WIB. Meanwhile, on June 21, 2024, at 03.50 WIT, the Sun will be at the north equinox, and on December 21, 2024, at 16.20 WIT, the Sun will be at the south solstice.

The main culmination in 2024 in Indonesia will occur between February 21, 2024, in Baa, East Nusa Tenggara, to April 4, 2024, in Sabang, Aceh, and September 7, 2024, in Sabang, Aceh, to October 21, 2024, in Baa, East Nusa Tenggara.
