Luhut Binsar Panjaitan, the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, is suggesting that the proposed 2-year moratorium on hotel development in South Bali could be extended to 10 years,
Quoted by Detik.com, Minister Luhut, commenting on plans for a prolonged 10-year long-term ban speaking on Sunday, 08 September 2024, added: “We (the Cabinet) want to meet in a limited session. After we finish the limited meeting, we will make an announcement.”
Luhut also used the occasion to comment on complaints about how agricultural land in Bali is being converted to commercial use to allow the construction of hotels and villas. Luhut has stated that changing agricultural land’s status is strictly prohibited.
Luhut said the proposed moratorium might last 2, 5, or even 10 years, depending on further deliberations.
Before Lihut’s recent comments on the moratorium, Bali’s interim Governor sent a letter to Jakarta concerning the proposed moratorium. That letter called for national support to temporarily halt the construction of new hotels and villas in Bali by imposing an official moratorium.
Bali’s interim Governor also bemoaned the conversion of agricultural lands to commercial use for building hotels and villas. Mahendra also expressed his concerns regarding the increasing crime rate in Bali.
