American Collapses and Dies on East Bali Trek
American Had Only Walked 1-Kilometer Before Suffering a Seizure and Dying.
A 29-year-old American tourist, Benjamin Philip Pereira, unexpectedly collapsed and died during a nature walk at Mount Meringgang in East Bali on Thursday, October 3, 2019,
As reported by Balipost.com and Tribun-Bali.com, the American had just used his handphone to take a picture of Mount Meringang in the Village of Culik, Abang, and East Bali when he collapsed without warning, suffered some sort of seizure, and died.
At the time of the incident, he was accompanied by a local villager, I Wayan Tambun, acting as a mountain guide.
Tambun quickly called nearby villagers, asking them to bring medical assistance from a nearby health center.
Tambun said he was sitting only some 5-meters behind the American when he collapsed.
When Doctor Ida Made Ananta from the Abang Medical Center (Puskesmas) arrived at the scene, he examined the American and immediately declared the man deceased.
Wayan Tambun was asked by a friend to accompany Pereira on the non-challenging nature trek. The two left the tourist’s accommodation on Pantai Amed, Northeast Bali, traveling on a motorcycle. The two had been hiking for only 30-minutes after parking the motorcycle, covering a winding path of around 1 kilometer in length.
The man’s body was sent to the Sanglah Hospital in Denpasar for Forensic Examination.
