Passenger Totals at Bali Ngurah Rai Airport at Normal Levels with Surge in Traffic Expected During Peak June Lebaran Travel Period
In the mid-part of May 2018, the number of passengers passing through Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport suffered a slight decrease, leading some to speculate that terror events in nearby East Java were taking a toll on Bali tourist arrivals.

As reported by, such speculation has been dismissed by the spokesman of the Bali Ngurah Rai Airport, Arie Ahsanurrohim, who said on Tuesday, May 22, 2018, that passenger flow-through number at the airport are operating within normal parameters.

Based on available data, the number of international air passengers for the period May 14-20 was down year-on-year only -0.10 percent. On May 14, 2018 a total of 35,378 passengers declined to 30,699 passengers on the following day, representing a decrease of -13.28%.

But international passenger numbers rebounded strongly during the period May 16-19, 2018, increasing by 4– 6%, but declined again by -2.75% on May 20th.

Meanwhile, domestic passengers using Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport reduced by -3.46% during the period May 14-20, 2018. The biggest dip took place on May 15th when domestic totals declined -18.41%. By May 20th domestic passenger total were on the mend, increasing 20.85%. On an aggregate basis for the period May 14-20, 2018, domestic passengers declined some -1.76%.

Officials were quick to warn that any slight decline in passenger number over the period of only one week could not be interpreted to represent a trend.

At the same time, officials at Bali’s airport remain confident that passengers’ numbers over the Lebaran period in the second and third weeks of June will increase dramatically.
