A wonderfully unique East-West artistic collaboration will take place in Canggu, Bali on Sunday, December 1, 2019, in a joint performance by French composer, pianist, and conductor Laurent Couson and one Gamelan Semara Ratih – a leading, internationally acclaimed gamelan group from Ubud, Bali.
Couson came to notice at a very young age when he was a music conservatory student in Tours, France. A prodigious talent, he continued his studies winning praise and honors at the Paris Conservatoire and the Ecole Normale de Paris.
After graduation, he became a staff composer at Radio France while making triumphal performances at Salle Pleyel, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Théâtre de la Ville, and Carnegie Hall. He also enjoyed a reign of five years as the Associate Music Director of the Orchestra and Choir of Three Cultures based in Seville and Rabat. His compositions have been performed by the National Orchestra of France, Orchestre National De L'Opéra De Paris, Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, Orchestre Lamoureux, Orchestre Symphonique de Prague, London Symphonic Orchestra, Orchestre de Bulgarian Radio, Bucharest Symphony Orchestra, Budapest Symphony Orchestra, European Camerata, Bangkok Symphonic Orchestra, Beijing Symphonic Orchestra, and the Qingdao Symphonic Orchestra.
A man of many parts, Couson is a prolific composer of film scores and as an actor on the silver screen. He heads the South Asia Music Production Production Company – an organization that produces stage shows, makes recordings, and presents concerts.
Gamelan Semara Ratih
First founded in 1989, membership the distinguished gamelan group Semara Ratih is comprised of musicians, composers, dancers, and choreographers from South Bali, many who have graduated from the Bali Arts Academy (ISI).
The group came to international acclaim for their power, excitement, dynamics performances, innovation, and dramatic breadth of its stage performances. Semara Ratih has performed extensively at top venues in Indonesia as well as internationally in Japan, Denmark, Japan, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, USA, and Canada.
The first Asian group to perform at The Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen in 1994, Semara Ratih’s performance was greeted with standing ovations and nine curtain calls.
Under the artistic direction of Anak Agung Fede Anom Putra, Gamelan Semara Ratih is widely considered a “living treasure of Bali”.
Once in a Lifetime Performance
On Sunday, December 1, 2019, the musical collaboration between Laurent Couson and Gamelan Semara Ratih will take place in a unique dinner performance at the Hotel Tugu Bali.
Seating is limited and advance booking is strongly recommended.
Cocktails and canapés will be served from 6:00 pm, with the concert at 7:00 pm followed by dinner.
Cost of canapés and concert is only Rp. 390,000 plus tax and service for advance purchase. When purchased at the door and subject to availability the cost is Rp. 450,000 plus tax and service.
A special performance ticket price of Rp. 100,000 is available for guests with a current student ID.
