A 45-year-old Australian woman from Paddington in Sydney, Vanessa Louise Crimmins, is now in police custody in Bali after being recorded on CCTV cameras purportedly stealing two laptop computers from the Popular Deli on Jalan Subak Sari in North Kuta on 30 October 2024.
Crimmins is reportedly employed as a teacher in Australia.
Crimmins is alleged to have absconded with two computer bags containing two laptops. Video footage streamed widely on local and Australian media shows the Australian carrying away with the two computer bags. Police recovered an HP Laptop valued at Rp. 4 million and a Rp. 10 million MacBook Air owned by a 24-year-old university student Ni Nyoman Ari Purwaningsih and 42-year-old Ardi Nurcahyadi.
As reported by Beritabali.com, Putu Sukarma, a spokesman for the Badung Police Headquarters, confirmed that police had received formal complaints from two Indonesian victims who had left their computers unattended in the lounge area of Popular Deli at 7:30 am.
Upon receiving reports of two missing computers, police rushed to the scene and reviewed video surveillance footage of the woman snatching the two computers. Using the film, police could apprehend Vanessa Crimmins, who was still on the store premises and in possession of the missing laptops.
If formal charges are pursued by the victims and police and Crommins is found guilty of the thefts, Crimmins could face up to five years in prison in Bali under Section 362 of the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP).
The case remains under investigation by North Kuta Police.
