Joshua Cavallo, an openly gay Australian professional football player who plays for A-League Men’s club Adelaide United, has broken ground in Bali for Cavallo Hideaway – a luxury gay getaway accommodation address.
Located in Cempaka Village, between Canggu and Seseh, Cavallo Hideaway is 20 minutes from Pererenan Beach and 40 minutes from Ubud.
Cavallo is the first openly gay male in Australian professional football; GQ Magazine and Attitude Magazine have recognized him as their “Man of the Year.“
Cavallo, age 25, posted on Instagram: “After years of dreaming, planning, and imagining, the moment is finally here. I can’t wait to take you on this incredible journey from blueprints to keys. It’s a place I wanted to create for people traveling to feel safe.”
The resort will reportedly be available to book on the AirBnb Booking platform. Various reports say fluid architectural lines inspire Cavallo Hideaway, comprised of two-bedroom villas with private plunge pools.
The Instagram Account claims: “The property is designed as a tranquil and inclusive retreat, blending contemporary stone architecture with Balinese natural charm. The design emphasizes bamboo structures, earthy tones, and open spaces to create a serene and luxurious atmosphere where judgment is absent, and every guest can truly feel free to be themselves.”
The hotel is due to open in December 2025 and is being created as part of a collaboration with ALAM Villas Cepaka.
Cavallo shared more details about the new queer-friendly hotel in Bali on the Cavallo Hideaway. Cavallo explained, “The property is designed as a tranquil and inclusive retreat, blending contemporary stone architecture with Balinese natural charm.”
“The design emphasizes bamboo structures, earthy tones, and open spaces to create a serene and luxurious atmosphere where judgment is absent, and every guest can truly feel free to be themselves.”
Cavallo Hideaway will be LGBTQIA+ friendly hotel but not necessarily gay-exclusive. The property will not be a gay-only space but rather a hotel and hideaway where members of the queer community can feel safe and at home in Bali.
Homosexuality, per se, is not illegal in most parts of Indonesia (except Aceh Province), and sexual contact between consenting adults of any sexual orientation is allowed. Gray areas in law enforcement include occasional raids on gay businesses, such as gay spas and gay gatherings, under the legal guise of preventing prostitution.
