Ozzie Teacher Facing 5 Years Jail in Bali for Theft

Vanessa Louise Crimmins (45), a yoga instructor from Paddington, Sydney, Australia, appeared on Thursday, 16 January 2024, in a Denpasar Courtroom charged with stealing a stowed backpack containing two computer devices from snatched from the Popular Deli in North Kuta on 30 October 2024,

Charged with stealing an HP Laptop and MacBook Air owned by two Indonesian customers, Crimmins appeared in court on Tuesday to hear the charges against her read into the official record together with supporting statements from victims and witnesses to her crime. Testifying against the Australian woman were the two victims continue to press prosecutors for a prosection – a  Jakarta man, Ardi Nurcahyadi, 42, and a Denpasar University student, Ni Nyoman Ari Purwaningsih, 24.

According to the Daily Mail, Australia, Crimminss had earlier tried to mitigate her actions, telling police and the Supermarket’s Security that she was drunk at the time of her arrest. During her initial interrogation, Cummins continued to fall asleep, making a proper interrogation difficult.

When approached by reporters at the Court, Crimmins expressed she was very sorry for her actions, although, at the same time, incongruously insisting, “‘I didn’t do anything wrong. ‘Big mistake, big mistake.”

Crimmins is indicted for theft under Article 362 of the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP), punishable by up to five years in prison.

The court heard from several witnesses, including the owners of the stolen computers, Jakarta man Ardi Nurcahyadi, 42, and Denpasar University student Ni Nyoman Ari Purwaningsih, 24.

Police also have CCTV footage capturing the theft on film.

Police alleged that the stolen bags and computers were found after the arrest while searching the North Kuta villa where Crimmins was staying.

Crimmins’ next court appearance will hear the woman make a formal statement in her defense.

Crimmins continues to be incarcerated at Kerobokan Prison in Bali.
