Pavel Artemiev Plays Chopin in Bali 30 June

The Padma Musical Series, a program of outstanding artistic performances, has announced its latest installment for the evening of Sunday, 30 June 2024, at the Padama Resort Legian in Bali.

Renowned Russian pianist Pavel Artemiev will present an evening of music dedicated entirely to the works of Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849). The evening’s merriment will be doubly joyous, marking the birthday date of Artemiev

Pavel Artemiev

Now based in Bali, Russian-born Pavel Artemiev’s prodigious talents as a pianist were recognized at a very young age, paving his entrance to the highly-acclaimed Moscow Central Music School and, later, the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in music. Pavel won the Scriabin’s Foundation prize in 2004 and was a finalist in the Russian National Music Awards category of “Artist of The Year in Classical Music.”

Part of a proud and unique musical heritage, Pavel Artemiev was a disciple and student of the E.R. Richter Piano School, which championed a special philosophical approach, musical interpretation, and interpretations of the legendary Soviet teacher G. G. Neuhaus, who taught at the Moscow Conservatory from 1922 until his death in 1964. Built on these musical cornerstones, to which Pavel now brings his piercing intellect and emotional depth.

Pavel has toured across Europe and Asia in recent years. He now lives in Bali, where he has performed several concerts for large audiences.

Pavel’s repertoire is as wide-ranging as it is impressive, including compositions by J.S. Bach, L.V. Beethoven, F. Liszt, F. Chopin, J. Brahms, A. Skryabin, S. Rachmaninov, and S. Prokofiev. With this almost limitless array of musical choices, he is now busily planning what he promises will be his most remarkable concert in a program dedicated exclusively to presenting  Frédéric Chopin’s most challenging compositions. The 30 June concert at The Padma Resort Legian on 30 June 2024 will also mark Pavel’s birthday – a date on which he will pay homage to arguably the greatest composer of all time –   Frédéric Chopin.

Frédéric François Chopin

Frédéric François Chopin ( 1810-1849) was arguably the most highly regarded composer and virtuoso of the Romantic Period. He wrote primarily for solo piano. Charles Rosen described him as a “poetic genius (whose talents) was based on a professional technique that was without equal in his generation.”

Generally acknowledged as a child prodigy, by age 21 Chopin had completed his formal musical education and relocated to Paris, where he died prematurely at age 39 in 1849. Introverted and reclusive, Chopin dedicated most of his time to teaching and composing. Accordingly, Chopin’s public exhibition of his talent was limited primarily to small private recitals in the best salons of Paris, with public concert performances numbering only 30 during his short lifetime.

Chopin’s compositions, which include two piano concertos, chamber music, and lyrical pieces based on Polish themes, are considered technically demanding. His repertoire include  mazurkas, waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises, instrumental ballade, études, impromptus, scherzi, études,, preludes, and sonatas.

Chopin’s personal and collegial friendships were diverse. Musically, he enjoyed friendships of mutual musical admiration with  Franz Liszt (1811-1886) and Robert Schumann (1810-1856). Romantically and involving the opposite sex, Chopin had a one-year liaison with Polish painter-pianist Maria Wodzińska (1836-1837). Later, there was a stormy and troubled romance with the French writer Aurore Dupin, best remembered by her masculine pen name George Sand (1804-1876). Iconoclastic by nature – a woman who fought against the prejudices of societal conservatism, George Sand was an early advocate for women’s rights and unbridled sexual passion and was generally opposed to the institution of marriage. During the last years of his life, which he spent in declining health, Chopin was financially supported by one of his students – the wealthy Scottish pianist Jane Stirling (1804-1859).
