RI Foreign Tourist Arrivals Up 20.27% in 2024

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) reports that foreign tourist arrivals to Indonesia from January to November 2024 totaled 12,658,048. This represents Indonesia’s highest level of visitors over the past five years.

Quoted in Kompas.com and speaking on Thursday, 2 January 2024, the Deputy for Statistics and Services for BPS, Pudji Ismarti, said: “Cumulatively, from January until November 2024, a total of 12.658.048 visitors represents an increase of 20.17% when compared to 2023.”

Ismarti said: “The total number of foreign tourist visits from January to November 2024 is the highest over the last five years.”

Pudji took the opportunity to detail statistics on tourism development provided by BPS in November 2024. “Thus, the total number of Indonesian foreign tourist visits (in November) was 1,092,067. This total was up 17.27 % year-on-year,” said Pudji. Nationally, the number of foreign tourist visitors by country of origin in  November was dominated by tourists from Malaysia. Numerous other nationality groups came from Australia and Singapore.

Pudji explained that foreign tourist visits from Malaysia decreased by 10.22 percent on a month-on-month basis for November but increased by 22.94 percent year-on-year. Adding: “Most Malaysian foreign tourists enter Indonesia via Soekarno-Hatta Airport, as is the case with Chinese foreign tourists. Meanwhile, most Australian foreign tourists enter through Ngurah Rai Airport (Bali).”

Puji said: “And in terms of the average length of stay, in November 2024, foreign tourists spent around 6.85 nights in Indonesia, or around almost 7 days.”

Domestic tourist trips decreased for November 2024. BPS cited that the number of trips made by domestic tourists reached 80,612,557 trips – some 1 percent lower on a monthly basis compared to October, which recorded 81.43 million trips.

Puji explained that the downturn in November trips and arrivals compared to October is a seasonal change augmented by the lack of major holidays, events, or festivals in November. However, for November 2023, domestic tourist trips increased by 33.62 percent. Then, cumulatively, through November 2024, domestic tourist trips increased by 22.81 % compared to the same period in 2023.
