The family of one of the at least five persons killed in the fire on board a petroleum tanker that caught fire near Karangasem, East Bali, on Wednesday, 07 August 2024, is complaining that the shipping company has failed to pay any promised compensation or burial costs.
Risma Trye Monica, the sister of 4th Machinist Riski (RDP), was quoted in Kompas.com, claiming on 22 December 2024 that in the four months since the tragic accident, she has failed to receive any compensation to the family or reimbursement of burial costs.
Following the accident, Risma claims that the owner of the vessel PT ASL, a company headquartered in Sunter, North Jakarta, promised that the family of the dead Machinist would receive an insurance payout and a payment from the State Social Security Company – BPJS. “Later, there was an email from PT ASL dated 10 September 2024 instructing all victims should send an explanation naming an executor (ahli waris). We sent a replying email on 07 October,” said Risma.
Insurance laws covering sea transportation in Indonesia provide for an insurance payout of Rp. 150 million that the shipping company must pay to the family of the dead crewmember.
The Petroleum Tanker Elisabeth 1 caught fire in August 2024 near Pulau Gili Tepekong in Karangasem Regency. From a total crew of 21, five men in the engine room at the time of the incident were burnt to death:
- Joko – Oiler
- Ismail – Oiler
- Riski – 4th Machinist
- Syahlan – Oiler
- Faturahman – Machinist cadet
Another 15 crew members were injured in the fire. Twelve crew members (3 females and 9 males) were treated at the Graha Bakti Hospital in Klungkung for minor injuries. Nine of the twelve were treated on an outpatient basis and released as outpatients.
Meanwhile, Risma has told the press that she remains unclear on the actual compensation promised by the shipping company. Risma also revealed that the BPJS Office told her that the victims of the shipping tragedy should receive compensation from BPJS, and those funds can now be disbursed. But, to obtain the payment, the family must first secure a written recommendation from the shipping company.
Through December 2024, no funds have been released from BPJS or PT ASL. Risma lamented: “There is no clear information. Whenever we contact the shipping company, they claim they are still processing the claim.”
