Tickets Going Fast: Joey Alexander Concert

Keeping track of Bali-born international jazz superstar Joey Alexander’s meteoric career is a challenging chore and a labor of admiration for everyone on the Balidiscovery.com editorial team.

Having just marked his 21st birthday, Joey has performed on major concert stages around the world and has recorded his 7th highly acclaimed jazz album in the short span of 11 years since leaving Bali to win his first Grand Prize at the Master Jam Fest (Ukraine) in 2013 at the tender age of 9.

Joey has performed on stages worldwide in cities that include Odessa, Montreal, Newport, Copenhagen, Montreux, Detroit, Mackinaw Island, Julliard School of Music, New Orleans, and Jakarta. Joey has also performed in Washington, D.C., for President Obama at the U.S. White House, played for a global television audience “live” from Lincoln Center, and, while still a teenager, “wowed” a sold-out engagement at Carnegie Hall.

Despite his busy travel schedule, Joey still manages an annual homecoming trip to Bali with his mom and dad. This year’s trip home to Bali” will see Joey return to the Stage of the Plumeria Ballroom of the Padma Legian Resort on Saturday, 21 September 2024.

Growing stardom keeps Joey Alexander busy touring and performing around the globe from his new home base in Baltimore, Maryland.

In November 2023, a half-year before his 21st birthday, he released his seventh Album, “Continuance.”

Continuance – Joey Alexander’s 7th Album

A review by Nolan DeBuke for thejazzword.com heaps praise on Joey Alexander’s latest album “Continuance” calling it an “Ode to Jazz’s Ever-Evolving Tale.”

What’s more, DeBuke says Alexander’s latest Album demonstrates “his exceptional talent as a jazz pianist and composer, marking a significant milestone in his already illustrious career.” On a journey of “creative evolution and technical mastery,” young Alexander is embarking on his third decade as “a formidable bandleader and composer,” said DeBuke.

DeBuke describes the album “Continuance”  as spontaneous in its feelings and meticulously crafted, managing to transcend the boundaries of studio recordings.

On his latest Album, Joey pays musical homage to Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” and the young artist’s profound and innate religiosity surfaces via the hymn  “Great Is Thy Faithfulness.” The opening number of the new Album – “Blue,” plumbs the full emotional range of Alexander’s incomparable narrative style, “balancing drama and tranquility with an effortless elegance.” This is lavish praise from a senior jazz critic for a young jazz pianist newly embarked on his legal majority.

The praise does not end there. The critic describes Joey as possessing a maturity beyond his years through his musical storytelling ability, which “confirms his status as a leading figure in the contemporary jazz scene.”

“Continuance” showcases Joey Alexander’s skill as a pianist-improviser, his tireless “mining” of contemporary musical styles, and the inspiration he draws from the diverse musical wizardry of the likes of Ennio Morricone, John Mayer, Burt Bacharach, and Bonnie Raitt.

“I learn from all these artists about the different genres I can bring into my music,” Joey says. “I still love hearing jazz, of course. But all these influences help me to be a better composer. I always think, ‘How can I connect with a broader audience.’ In my pursuit of being a better improviser and composer, I always strive to bring fresh, creative ideas to the table melodically and harmonically.”
