Water Taxi from Airport to Canggu Under Review

As reported by NusaBali.com, the Directorate for Traffic and Sea Transportation (Ditlala) for the Ministry of Transport has commenced a study exploring a water taxi service connecting Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport with several tourism areas in South Bali.

The proposed water tax service will reduce Bali’s severely congested traffic conditions. The Director of Traffic and Sea Transportation, Hartanto, said priority would be given to a water taxi service connecting Bali’s Airport and the heavily developed and popular Canggu area in North Kuta.

“Yes, today I want to review (the project) with a group of experts. This is planned to reduce traffic congestion, primarily between the Airport and Canggu. Later, other water taxi ports will be developed,” said Hartanto in Bali on Tuesday, 14 January 2025.

In addition to Canggu, other routes connecting the Airport with Kuta, Sanur (via the port of Benoa), and Nusa Penida are under review.

Hartanto said he hopes the water taxi project from the airport to Canggu can commence operation in 2025. He noted that Canggu often experiences traffic congestion due to its popularity as a destination in Bali. Adding: “We are focusing on the Canggu route, which can be commenced in 2025. I hope this receives public support so that the image of Bali as a tourism destination can be preserved. Let’s not let people decide not to visit Bali because of traffic congestion.”

The first step in the water taxi project is to form a working team assembled from interested and related parties in Bali. After that, the team will join others in undertaking a feasibility study to review infrastructure and route issues.

The proposed operation will involve the private sector in the operational aspects of the water taxi service. It is envisioned that fast boats for 100 to 200 passengers will be employed in the water taxi service.

“I am suggesting a brand name of ‘Bali Boat,” said Hartanto.

Hartanto says he is optimistic that the water taxi service will effectively reduce traffic congestion in Bali and help support tourism visitor levels.
