Baggage Limits: Lion, Batik, & Wing Air

The Lion Air Group will impose new baggage rules for its air passengers, effective Sunday, 01 December 2024.

All airlines operating under the Lion Air Group affiliation, including Lion Air, Batik Air, and Wings Air, will apply new limitations on the size and type of baggage that ticketed passengers can carry “free” (without surcharge).

The new regulations were announced on Wednesday, 13 November 2024, by the Director for Strategic Corporate Communications for the Lion Air Group, Danang Mandala Prihantoro.

As reported by Kompas.com, starting on Sunday, 01 December 2024, the following new luggage rules and tariffs apply:

  • For baggage containers made from cardboard, styrofoam, wooden pallets, and baskets weighing more than 10 kilograms and measuring less than 35 x 35 x 30 centimeters weighing less than 5 kilograms will be charged at the 5 kilogram tariff rate. Items with the above dimensions weighing more than 5 kilograms will be charged according to their actual weight, which varies by destination.
  • Alternatively, passengers will have the option of sending their personal belongings as cargo shipped before the passenger’s flight date.

Danang Mandala explained that baggage packed in cardboard, styrofoam, wooden pallets, and baskets are at greater risk of damage or leaking during the shipping process. He explained that these risks can potentially cause damage and harm to other people’s baggage or the cleanliness of baggage storage areas.

By endeavoring to make baggage conform to more standardized dimensions, the handling, processing, and storage of baggage will be facilitated and also help protect the baggage brought by other passengers on a flight. More uniform dimensions of baggage also help to optimize the carrying capacity of baggage storage rooms.

Danang continued, saying that each aircraft has a limited ability to carry baggage. The new rules ensure that all passengers enjoy equal rights to carry their personal belongings on a trip.
