The Bali Branch of the National Anti-Narcotics Agency (BNNP-Bali) has swung into high gear in anticipation of increased illicit narcotics flowing through the Island during the year-end holiday period.
As reported by BeritaBali.com, Bali Police and BNNP officials have recently intercepted a narcotics shipment from Medan, North Sumatra, totaling 5.5 kilograms of marijuana. The shipment of “ganja” was seized by officials when a cargo expedition company was shipping the narcotics to a commercial address in Bali.
A team of BNNP enforcement officers has arrested two men, identified only by their initials, ADO (21) and RZ (29). Police identify ADO as a university student coming from Samosir, North Sumatra, while RZ is identified only as a man from Jakarta.
The Head of the Narcotics Enforcement Division at BNNP-Bali, Police Commissioner I Made Sinar Subawa, confirms that the arrests were made after police received information from the North Sumatra Branch of the BNNP regarding a package containing marijuana that had been shipped to Bali from Medan.
Working on this lead, the BNNP-Bali Team arrested ADO and RZ on Sunday, 24 November 2024, at a warehouse of a villa located in Ubud, Gianyar, Central Bali. Subawa said on 05 December 2024 that ADO initially tried to run and evade arrest but was quickly subdued by police.
At the arrest scene, police seized 2,604.68 grams of marijuana.
During police interrogation, ADO, the university student, revealed that his job was to order the marijuana while RZ’s job was to pick up and deliver the packets of drugs.
Police say the two suspects admitted that one packet shipped from Medan to Bali has yet to arrive. As a result, police brought the two men to the expedition company in Denpasar. The remaining packet arrived in Bali on 28 November 2024. Police were able to recover the third packet of marijuana, a package containing 2,919.3 grams, bringing the gross weight of the three packages of ganja to 5.5 kilograms
Police Commissioner Sinar told the press that the narcotics smugglers planned to distribute the large haul of marijuana in Kuta and Seminyak during the Christmas and New Year period.
Police also visited the boarding house rented by RZ for his family on Jalan Arjuna, in the village of Mas, Gianyar. At that address, police confiscated a bank book, an ATM Card, and a white crystal substance that is now undergoing laboratory assessment by police.
ADO and RZ are now liable to be criminally charged under Sections 114 and 132 of the 2009 Anti-Narcotics law, which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
