A job advertised on a Facebook Accout publicizing positions vacant for Internet professionals in Bali is the object of an avalanche of criticism for its blatant discriminatory message.
The IT Coordinator position publicized on behalf of LB Resorts clearly stated that only non-Hindus need to apply.
As reported by BeritaBali.com, Arya Sumerastha, purportedly posting on behalf of LB Resort (PT. Loyo Bondar Management) – a local villa and hotel management company, advertised two separate positions: a non-Hindu IT Coordinator and a member of the IT Monitoring Team to monitor security,
Bondar Loyo Management (LB Resorts) manages Villa & Apartment complexes, part of the Loyo & Bondar Group. The company claims it is developing several Villa complexes in Bal and is said to operate 50 villas by the end of 2024. and targeting to handle 100 villas by the end of 2025.
Immediately after being uploaded to the Internet, criticism rained down on LB Resorts for the religiously discriminatory message prejudicial to Bali’s majority religious grouping.
Arya Sumerastha, who owned the website advertising the IT positions, quickly uploaded a public apology on social media. That apology expressed remorse for positing the prejudicial job vacancy, claiming he had no intention to offend Bali’s majority Hindu population.
“And once again, I would like to convey that I did not mean to offend Hindus. I want to express my deepest apologies for my post yesterday. I made a mistake and still have much to learn,” said Sumerastha.
Separately, Tjokorda Oka Artha Ardana Sukawati (Cok Ace), former Deputy Governor of Bali and local hotelier in his own right, has joined the chorus of those criticizing the company behind the job vacancy advertisement, describing the action as an “extraordinary abuse.”
As reported by Tribun-Bali.com, Cok Ace said: “In my opinion, (the advertisement) was unethical and too discriminatory, what’s more, when the vacancy was posted on social media.” He severely admonished the villa management company, suggesting such a company posting such requirements should not be operating a business in Bali. He claimed that such an attitude was too naive, especially when the Balinese people were trying to maintain and protect their culture. He questioned how any company in Bali’s tourism sector could refuse to employ Balinese Hindus.
Cok Ace, commenting on the management company and its advertisement, continued, “Isn’t this very contradictory? Try to find a place that doesn’t have its religious ceremonies. This is ridiculous. Our Balinese ceremonies are used for promotion; our Balinese culture is used for promotion, while our Balinese employees are not allowed to think about culture. This is very strange”.
“I feel strongly on this point. On the one hand, don’t use culture to promote your business in Bali and then, on the other hand, trample on our local culture,” concluded Cok Ace.
