Kompas.com reports that only 40% of international visitors to Bali since 14 February 2024 have paid the new Rp. 150,000 tourism tax, which became “mandatory” on that date.
Data collected by the Bali Tourism Office (Dinas Pariwisata Bali) said Rp. 39.9 billion was collected from 219,466 foreign tourists between 07 February and 18 March 2024. During the entire month of February 2024, 467,877 foreign tourists, equivalent to 15,000 foreign travelers per day, came to the Island.
The Head of the Bali Tourism Office, Tjok Bagus Pemayun, said in a written statement issued on Wednesday, 20 March 2024: “From the total number of foreign tourists coming to Bali, only 40 percent are paying the PWA (foreign tourist tax).” Pemayun continued: “Since the tax came into effect, the number of foreign tourists paying the rax has averaged around 5,000 daily.
Tjok Bagus Pemayun has pledged that his office, accompanied by provincial tourism leaders, will conduct surprise inspections at several tourist objects across the island. The inspection visits will begin on 26 March 2024. Among the tourist objects slated for visits are Uluwatu Temple, Tanah Lot, Ulun Danu Beratan, and Tampaksiring.
The surprise inspection visits will only be conducted at the entrance gates or exits of tourism objects to ensure the smooth operations of the respective attractions are maintained. Inspection visits are planned to occur twice a week.
The surprise inspection visits will determine how many foreign visitors have paid the new PWA.
