Indonesian Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, has announced that Indonesia will launch a new substantial tourism fund in August 2024,
“The tourism fund has just been decided at a meeting with the president and the president-elect. The regulations are targeted to be final in August (2024),” said Sandiaga during his weekly online briefing in Jakarta on Monday, 08 July 2024.
He added that the new tourism fund of Rp 2 trillion was budgeted to be part of the 2025 State Revenue and Expenditure Budget Plan (RAPBN) and is not linked to any tourism fees charged to visitors.
The new fund, Minister Sandiaga’s brainchild, is intended to support quality and sustainable tourism projects, such as international events, cultural events, sports tourism, and MICE events (meetings, incentives, conventions, exhibitions).
Sandiaga said these funds will be used for national tourism branding and promoting tourism in Indonesia. “For example,” he said,” the funds can be used to invite big world conferences, such as the recent World Water Conference in Bali. In the future, such funds could be used to attract major sporting events, such as the FIFA World Cup.”
Sandiaga said the fund will be used for major concerts in addition to conferences and sporting events. According to Sandiaga, the number of foreign tourists to Indonesia increases by 10-15 percent every time major international events are held.
Sandiaga assured that the Rp. 2 trillion tourism fund would be managed by the Public Service Agency (BLU) organized under the Ministry of Finance), namely the Environmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH), ensuring transparency and accountability.
Sandiaga took pains to clarify that the Rp. 2 trillion fund will not become a burden on tourists visitors. He emphasized that the Ministry will not manage the promotional funds but under the control of BPDLH, ensuring that the program does not burden tourists.
