A moderate earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter Scale struck the Indian Ocean south of Bali on Thursday, 25 January 2024, at 10:41 0.m. local time. The seismic event was widely felt, rousing sleeping people living in Badung, Denpasar, Gianyar, Lombok, and surrounding areas of NTB.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located 55 Kilometers southeast of Lombok and Bali in the Indian Ocean at an estimated depth of 101 kilometers below sea level ( 8.99 degrees South Latitude and 115.69 degrees east longitude ).
The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climate, and Geophysics (BMKG) termed the earthquake a “moderate amplitude” resulting from subduction between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates (an oblique thrust fault).
While the earthquake was felt in vast areas of Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa, there have been no reports of related casualties or property damage. There was no threat of a tsunami connected with this incident.
