The Bali Branch of the National Agency for Meteorology, Climate, and Geophysics (BBMKG) reports that Bali experienced 582 earthquakes in 2024, with the majority of these seismic events measuring below 3 magnitudes.
The Chief of BBMKG in Bali, Cahyo Nugroho, quoted by the State News Agency Antara, told the press on Monday, 06 January 2025, that data compiled by his office showed that Bali experienced more earthquakes in 2024 than in 2023, when 324 quakes were recorded. This represents a substantial increase of 79.6%.
Most of the earthquakes recorded in 2024 had shallow epicenters measuring less than 60 kilometers below the earth’s surface. Of the 582 earthquakes measured in Bali in 2024, only 20.1% had a magnitude of more than 3 M.
Bali experienced no earthquakes with an intensity exceeding 5 M for the entire year of 2024. Among the strongest earthquakes for the year were in Gianyar Regency on 07 and 21 September 2024, measuring 4.8 M and 4.9 M, respectively.
Region III – East Java, Bali, NTB, and in part NTT
For BMKG’s Region III, which encompasses East Java, Bali, NTB, and a part of NTT, there were a total of 7,730 earthquakes occurring on both land and sea.
For the entire region, earthquakes below magnitude 3.0 dominated with 6,650 occurrences, followed by earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 to less than magnitude 5.0 with 1,072 occurrences, and only eight earthquakes occurred in regional area III throughout 2024 with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater than 5.0.
In closing, Cahyo took pains to underline the inability to predict future earthquakes’ location and intensity accurately. For this reason, BBMKG is actively conducting preparedness drills to deal with earthquakes and tsunamis and minimize losses and loss of life.
BBMKG is working with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to form a community that is ready and responsive to disasters, especially earthquakes and tsunamis.
