CNBC Indonesia reports that Indonesia’s newly installed Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, has announced a key target for her five-year term of office: adding five “super priority destinations” for national tourism.
Widiyanti has proclaimed that the five new “super priority destinations” to receive special promotional focus are Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Borobudur Temple in Central Java, Mandalike on Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara, Labuan Bajo on the Island of Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, and Likupang in North Sulawesi.
Previously, during the administration of the Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno (2020-2024), ten priority tourism destinations were highlighted. In 2021, Sandiaga reduced the list of priority tourism destinations to five. The new Tourism Minister, Widiyanti, has selected her list of five “super priority destinations.”
Explaining the change, Widi said on Thursday, 31 October 2024″ “Indeed, in the previous government, there were ten priority destinations. These were reduced to five super priorities to be more focused, concentrated, and effective in developing these tourism destinations.” Adding: “We will continue what has been implemented because it is not yet finished and needs improvements.”
The Tourism Minister assured that five more destinations will be selected once the five “super priority destinations” are perfected.
The Minister quickly clarified that she will also focus on securing “quality international tourists” to visit Indonesia. Minister Widiyanti said her Ministry would promote overseas tourism to achieve that goal. “We will promote more to high-quality tourist visitors and undertake more overseas promotional activities,” said Widi.
Widi emphasized that she would coordinate with various ministries to improve the comfort and welfare of domestic and foreign tourists. Widi said the coordination would focus on accessibility, transportation, and airfare prices. “Regarding accessibility, transportation, and affordable airfares, we must immediately achieve this in cooperation with other Ministries/Institutions so that foreign and domestic tourists can travel in Indonesia more cheaply,” explained Widi.
