The body of an unknown male foreign national was evacuated from the cliff base at Uluwatu Beach in South Bali on the afternoon of Thursday, 29 August 2024.
As reported by Kompas.com and Beritabali.com, a spokesman for the Denpasar Police, AKP I Ketut Sukadi, said police became aware of the presence of the dead body of a foreign tourist via photographs of the dramatic beachfront taken in the afternoon at around 5:30 pm. “The foreign tourist was photographing the beachfront when the camera unintentionally captured the image of a dead body lying among the boulders at the base of the cliff,” saif Sukadi.
When reviewing the photograph, the tourist spotted the dead body and immediately told a local tour guide, Kadek Adianto (39), who, in turn, advised local authorities. Police dispatched to the location quickly confirmed that a dead body was lodged in the boulder on the beach.
Subsequently, officers from the Water, Marine, and Airborne Police (Polairud) working with the Bali Search and Rescue Team (Basarbas-Bali) evacuated the corpse.
Police evacuating the body confirmed that the the man’s body, clad only in a pair of underwear, had no documentation to assist in determining his identity.
“At 7:30 pm, police were able to lift the body from the rocky shoreline using mountaineering gear and a pulley,” said Officer Sukadi.
Police continue to investigate to determine the identity of the dead man and determine the actual cause of death. Meanwhile, the body is being stored in the morgue of Professor Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar.
Police have tentatively only identified the man as a foreigner based on his physical appearance, including the body’s skin color and general posture.
The evacuation of the body from the 90-meter high cliff’s base was made problematic due to darkness and high sea conditions. Emergency crews retrieved the body after the rising tide swept the body 10 meters out to sea, away from the rocky shoreline.
