Tourists Spending More in Indonesia

The Chief of the National Statistics Bureau (BPS), Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, reports that foreign tourists’ expenditures in Indonesia increased in the second quarter of 2024. Money spent on accommodation demonstrated the most significant increase.

During Q2 of 2024, the average spending by foreign visitors reached US$1,443.70, equivalent to Rp. 23,45 million. This is an increase over the average spend of US$1,429 per visitor per visit recorded in the previous quarter, Q1 2024.

As reported by Kompas.com, Amalia estimates that 36.03% of all expenditures by foreign tourists are allocated for accommodation costs. This is followed by food and beverage expenses, constituting 19.26% of the average spend. Shopping and souvenir spending equals 11.04% of the average tourist spending in Bali.

Meanwhile, tourist visits to Indonesia are on the increase.

In June 2024, the number of foreign visitors to Indonesia achieved 1.7 million visitors, a 2.05% month-to-month increase and a 9.99% boost on a year-on-year comparison. 

Indonesia recorded 6.41 million tourist visitors on a cumulative basis from January to June 2024. This was a 21.02% increase over the same period in 2023, when 5.3 million visitors came to Indonesia.

Total arrivals for the first six months 2024 were the highest since 2020. 

In June 2024, the greatest number of foreign tourists coming to Indonesia came from Malaysia, which sent 188,300 visitors. This was followed by Singapore (157,100) and Australia (144,100).
