The middle of March saw the return of seasonal flotsam and jetsom washing up on Bali’s fabled Kuta Beach, brought to the shoreline by prevailing westerly winds.
RadarBali.id reports that on Wednesday, 13 March 2024, trash and debris were scattered along the entire length of Bali’s iconic Kuta Beach. The whole beachfront, known for its white sandy beaches, was covered in trash and debris, deterring tourists from lazing on Kuta Beach.
The head of the Management of Hygiene and Waste (B3) of Badung Regency’s Environmental and Forestry Agency (DLHK Badung), AA Gede Dalem, confirmed that the beachfront was overwhelmed by trash washing ashore.
Observers report that the trash from Kuta Beach to Legian Beach consists mainly of wood and other organic materials.
DHLK Badung has deployed personnel to clean the beach and haul away the trash. As many as 300 DHLK staff and ten pieces of heavy equipment are now on the scene on Kuta Beach,
The phenomena of trash washing ashore occur each year as part of the extreme weather that occurs with the change of season characterized by heavy rains and strong winds,
Government cleaners, assisted by local community members, are cleaning the beach. They are gathering debris in large piles to be removed to a recycling center in Mengwi.
In the first few days of the clean-up, some 500 tons of waste have been removed from the beach.
