A 44-year-old American woman, Jamie Lou Walley, died while trekking the rice fields of Payangan, north of Ubud, on Sunday afternoon, 09 July 2023.
Whalley was on a guided, organized trekking excursion when she collapsed while suffering an asthma attack at 6:15 pm near Banjar Gadungan Desa Bresela, Payangan, Gianyar Regency.
NusaBali.com reports that Whalley was hiking the rice terraces in the company of a friend, her husband, and a guide when she fell and tumbled into the cultivated rice padi. The excursion was led by a local guide, I Made Wardana, on a trek that commenced at 2:30 pm.
The woman was reportedly in respiratory distress and died in the field shortly after falling.
A morbidly obese victim weighing an estimated 198 kilograms, difficult terrain, and fading light made the work of the rescue teams problematic, requiring two hours and a ten-member team of men to bring Whalley’s body to the nearest paved road.
The woman’s body was taken to The Payangan Hospital for further disposition.
Many adventure companies in Bali have strict standard operating procedures and guidelines limiting participation in their activities based on age and other physical limitations.
