Indonesia’s Minister for Tourism and the Creative Economy is targeting 1.5 million Mainland Chinese Tourists to visit Bali in 2024. The new target represents an increase of 707,000 Chinese visitors over the number of PRC visitors achieved in 2023.
As reported by Detik.com, the Regional Marketing Director for the Tourism Ministry, Wisnu Sindhutrisno, says the Chinese travelers coming to Bali will travel to and from Bali on 13 airlines now flying between Mainland China and the island. Adding: “We count a current seat capacity (between PRC and Bali) of 1.1 million. We will push this so the sear capacity reaches 1.5 million.”
Wisnu said the Chinese government claims 40 million PRC citizens will travel abroad on holiday in 2024. This is substantially more than the 10 million Mainland Chinese who undertook foreign travel in 2023. While mentioning that the Tourism Ministry remains committed to attracting “quality tourists” to Indonesia, Wisnu said Indonesia wants tourists with high spending levels and extended lengths of stay. He stated that Chinese tourists to Bali now stay for an average of 5-7 days.
Wisnus pointed out that Chinese travelers have four peak travel periods to foreign destinations each year.
Wisnu said that 65% of the Chinese who now travel to Bali are Millenials, with the remaining tourists comprising people aged 40 and above. He said Chinese tourists characteristically visit attractions offering unique travel and cultural experiences, with Chinese visitors preferring locations that are “Instagramable” and suitable for selfie photography.
The Tourism Ministry Official said that the PRC Government is urging its citizens to undertake domestic holidays as the COVID-19 pandemic ends. “So, there is an effort by the PRC first to restore its domestic tourism. While the domestic market is large, at the same time, China claims that the 40 million potential international outbound tourist market has only recovered to a level of 10 – 15 million,” said Wisnu.
Wisnu said Chinese travelers totaled 707,347 coming to Indonesia between January and November 2023. As the PRC market recovers, Chinese visitors constituted 5.4% of all foreign visitors in December 2023.
Juneyao Airlines Commence Flight to Bali
The Chinese Airline Juneyao operated its first flight from Shanghai to Denpasar on Saturday, January 20, 2024. Flying an Airbus A320neo designated as HO 1355 left Shanghai at 08:35 a.m. local time, landing in Denpasar at 3:50 p.m. carrying 164 passengers.
Juneyao Airlines now operates to Bali daily.
The Chinese airline plans to replace the Airbus A320neo with a a larger Boeing 787 Dreamliner capable of carrying 360-400 passengers to serve passenger numbers to Bali that are expected to grow. The Tourism Ministry is lobbying Juneyao Airline to supplement its passenger capacity to Bali and consider operating additional flights to Jakarta and Yogyakarta.
Meanwhile, the general manager of PT Angkasa Pura I, which manages the Bali Airport, noted that Juneyao Airlines represents the 38th airline operating international flights to Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport,
