As Indonesia formally enters an endemic period of learning to co-exist with COVID-19, the Indonesian Government has formally revoked requirements to wear health masks on domestic and international air journeys, public areas, and large-scale public events.
The revocation of the mask-wearing requirement is the subject of a circular memorandum issued on Friday, 09 June 2023, addressing health protocols during the transition out of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The key points of Circular Memorandum No1 of 2023:
1. All participants in domestic and international journeys, participating in public events, or large-scale public activities are urged to continue to protect themselves from contagion by the COVID-19 virus by:
a. Recommended vaccination against the COVID-19 virus, including a booster shot or fourth dosage, especially by anyone designated in a high-risk group.
b. The public is no longer required to wear a surgical health mask when healthy and not at risk of contagion from COVID-19, but required to wear a surgical mask when traveling or in a public area or when in ill health or at risk of COVID-19 infection.
c. Recommended use of hand sanitizers or water/soap to routinely wash their hands, mainly if they come in contact with potentially unclean items and surfaces.
d. Those in an unhealthy state or at risk of infection from COVID-19 are urged to maintain physical distance from others and avoid crowds.
e. The public is recommended to continue to use the SATUSEHAT online application to safeguard their health.
2. All operators of public transportation, public facilities, and hosting large-scale events in cooperation with local government bodies are recommended to:
a. Continue to practice personal protective measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
b. Continue to monitor, develop, and implement steps in accordance with health protocols to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
