Five Arak Cocktail Recipes

Bali’s Governor Wayan Koster is a fervent champion of arak – the “home-brewed” alcoholic beverage of Bali. This popular drink uses the sap of lontar palm trees, coconut juice, rice, or fruits fermented and distilled with spices, honey, and fruit.

Governor Koster is actively promoting arak consumption both at home and abroad. For what he claims was health purposes, Koster recently urged people living in Bali to consume a serving of arak to start and again at the end of each day.

In support of the Provincial program to promote the Island’s home brewery products and “Bali Arak Day” (Hari Arak Bali) that fell on 29 January 2023, we’re sharing six arak-based mixology recipes recently published by Bali Tours Clubs and Balipost.com.

Arak is an excellent and relatively inexpensive base for a cocktail.

Arak Madu

Arak Madu (Honey Arak)

Ingredients:

5 cl of arak

2 cl of lemon juice

2 cl of honey

1 cl of water

Method: Combine all the ingredients and shake in a mixer. Serve in a cocktail glass.

Ingredients:

4 cl of arak

1 cl of grenadine

orange juice

Method: Put the arak and grenadine in a cocktail glass and add ice. Add orange juice and enjoy.

Arak Caipirinha

Ingredients:

5 cl of arak

slices of lime juice

2 teaspoons of white sugar

Method: Use a pestle to crush the lime slices in a cocktail glass and then fill the glass with ice. Add the arak and stir all the ingredients.

Ingredients: 

5 cl of arak

1 cl of Cointreau

12 cl of ginger ale

Juice of ¼ lemon

Method: Combine the arak, Cointreau, and lemon juice and shake or stir until all the ingredients have combined. Top up this cocktail with ginger ale and ice.

Ingredients:

5 cl of arak

One shaved sliver of gula aren (brown or palm sugar)

Juice of ¼ lemon

Soda water

Fresh mint leaves

Method: Mix the arak, gula aren, and lemon juice in a glass. Stir or shake until all the ingredients have combined. Then, add soda water, mint leaves, and ice.

Ingredients:

4 cl of arak

Coca-cola

Method: Mix arak and Coca-Cola. Ice can be added with a garnish of a slice of lemon or orange.
